Men's Physique Class Selection: Which Class Should You Enter?

Written by Ali Bilal — IFBB Elite Pro & Founder of ALITE WEAR

The class structure in NPC Men's Physique is straightforward once you understand it, but confusing when you're registering for the first time. This guide covers exactly what classes are available, what the eligibility rules are, and which class to enter based on your situation.

NPC Men's Physique class structure

Height classes (all shows)

Men's Physique at NPC shows is divided into classes by height. You are measured at athlete check-in and placed in the appropriate class by show officials. Classes are typically:

Class Height Range Notes
Class A Up to 5'7" (170cm) Measured in street shoes at check-in
Class B 5'7" to 5'9" (170–175cm)
Class C 5'9" to 5'11" (175–180cm)
Class D Over 5'11" (180cm+)

Height class structures can vary slightly by show — some larger shows add an additional class. Always check the specific show's athlete guide for the class divisions being used at that event.

Experience classes

Class Eligibility Recommendation
Novice Has not previously placed first (won a trophy) in any Men's Physique class Enter this first for all first-time competitors
Open Open to all competitors regardless of experience Enter alongside Novice if you want maximum exposure
Masters 40+ Age 40 or over on competition day Can enter alongside Novice or Open
Masters 45+ Age 45 or over Some shows offer this as a separate class
Teen Age 18 or under Available at some shows only

Which classes to enter: the decision guide

If it's your first competition

Enter Novice in your height class. If the show offers both Novice and Open and you want maximum stage time, enter both — you will compete in two separate classes but the stage time and feedback is valuable. If Novice isn't offered at the show you're attending, enter Open in your height...

If you've competed before but haven't won Novice

Continue entering Novice until you win your class. Once you've won first place in Novice, you are no longer eligible for Novice at the NPC level and will move to Open only.

If you're 40 or over

Enter Masters alongside your Novice or Open class. Many athletes at Masters level are highly competitive — the class is not easier than Open, but it provides an additional opportunity to compete and accumulate qualification points for national events.

You can enter multiple classes at the same show

Most NPC shows allow competitors to enter more than one class at an additional entry fee per class. Many first-time competitors enter both Novice and Open to get more stage time. Experienced athletes may enter Open and Masters. Entering multiple classes means more time on stage, more feedb...

Height measurement at check-in: what to expect

At NPC athlete check-in, competitors stand against a height chart in their street shoes (flat shoes, no heels). A show official records your height and assigns you to the appropriate class. This is final — you cannot choose your class, and you cannot move between classes at the show.

If your height is at the borderline between two classes, you will be placed in the lower class if you measure at or below the threshold, and in the higher class if you measure above it. There is no appeal process for height placement at the show.

Know your height before registration

When registering online for a show, you select your class based on your height. Measure yourself accurately (standing barefoot against a wall) so you register in the correct class. Arriving at check-in in a different class than you registered for can create administrative complications &md...

Frequently asked questions

What are the Men's Physique classes at NPC shows?

Height classes (A through D, divided by height measured at check-in) and experience classes (Novice, Open, Masters 40+/45+, Teen at some shows). You compete in your height class within whichever experience class you're eligible for.

What is the difference between Novice and Open?

Novice is for athletes who haven't won a first-place trophy in Men's Physique. Open is for everyone. You can enter both at the same show. Once you win Novice, you move to Open only.

Can I compete in Masters and Open at the same show?

Yes. Masters athletes can enter both their Masters class and Open (and Novice if eligible) at the same show. Additional entry fee applies per class.

What height class am I in?

You are measured at athlete check-in in flat shoes. Show officials place you in the appropriate class — you don't self-report. Register online based on your accurately measured height.
