Men's Physique Competition Day Timeline: Hour by Hour

Written by Ali Bilal — IFBB Elite Pro & Founder of ALITE WEAR

Ali Bilal is an IFBB Elite Pro Men's Physique competitor and founder of ALITE WEAR. He has competed at shows ranging from local NPC events to international pro shows and knows how drastically competition day logistics differ from what first-timers expect.

Your first competition day will feel chaotic if you don't know what to expect. Prejudging starts. Classes are called in random order. You might be on stage at 9am or 2pm with no way to know exactly when until you're backstage. You wait for hours, then go on stage for 10 minutes.

Understanding the structure of competition day before you arrive removes most of the anxiety and lets you focus on performing — not navigating confusion.

The night before: final preparation

Evening

Final tan application

Apply your second or final coat of competition tan. Do not shower after application. Sleep on dark sheets. Keep the room warm — cold skin absorbs tan less evenly.

Before bed

Pack your show bag

Pack everything tonight, not in the morning. You do not want to be searching for your competitor number or spare shorts under time pressure in the morning.

Before bed

Eat your final carb meal

A moderate carb meal before bed — rice, sweet potato — continues topping up glycogen overnight. Don't overeat; discomfort in the morning affects your energy and your stage look.

Competition day: prejudging

6:00–7:00am

Wake up and breakfast

Eat a moderate carb meal 2–3 hours before prejudging. White rice, oats, or similar. A small amount of fat (peanut butter, avocado) and some protein. Avoid anything high-fiber or gas-producing. Sip water with breakfast but don't overdrink.

7:00–8:00am

Tan touch-up

Inspect your tan in bright light and apply touch-ups to any streaked or lighter areas — especially elbows, knees, feet, and hairline. Allow touch-up to dry fully before putting on your shorts.

8:00–8:30am

Athlete check-in

Arrive at the venue and collect your competitor number. Attend the mandatory athlete meeting if scheduled. Find your backstage area and set up your bag at your spot.

30 min before your class

Backstage pump

15–20 minutes of band work, push-ups, cable pulls, and light resistance work to fill muscle bellies. Eat a fast-absorbing carb — rice cakes, banana, or a small amount of gummy bears. A light application of posing oil or glaze goes on now.

On deck

Line up and focus

When your class number is called to the "on deck" area, this is your final 5–10 minutes. Stay mentally focused, keep posing your hands and feet, and review your walk-on and front pose in your mind. Do not chat or relax — stay switched on.

On stage

Prejudging rounds

Walk on stage confidently. Prejudging for Men's Physique includes a walk-on, front and back comparisons, and potentially individual quarter-turns or a pose-down. This is where the judging happens. Stay in presentation mode — smile, hold your poses, breathe.

Prejudging is where the competition is won

Every judge's scoring decision is made during prejudging. Finals is a presentation event — results are already locked in. If you only have one performance to give that day, give it at prejudging. That's where it counts.

Between prejudging and finals

Post-prejudging

Eat a real meal

The hard part is over. Eat a proper meal — protein, carbs, some fat — to restore energy and enjoy the process. Many competitors eat something they've missed during prep at this point. You've earned it.

Afternoon

Rest and recover

Competition day is physically and mentally draining. Rest where you can — in the venue if you want to watch other divisions, or at the hotel if you need to conserve energy. Do not train. Do not try new foods.

Pre-finals

Touch up and re-warm

Apply a light tan touch-up before finals if needed. A short backstage pump before finals is appropriate — same protocol as before prejudging.

Frequently asked questions

What time should I arrive at a Men's Physique competition?

60–90 minutes before prejudging starts. Check-in typically opens 1–2 hours before the show. Arriving early gives you time to set up, do your tan touch-up, and warm up properly.

What is the difference between prejudging and finals?

Prejudging is where the actual judging and scoring takes place. Finals is a presentation event where results are announced. Prejudging is where the competition is won.

How long does prejudging take?

2–6 hours depending on the show size. Your class could be called at any point in that window — stay in the venue and stay ready once prejudging starts.

What should I eat on competition day?

Moderate carbs 2–3 hours before prejudging. Fast carbs backstage (rice cakes, bananas, gummy bears) before going on stage. A full meal between prejudging and finals.

Every Detail Locked In.

On competition day, the last thing you want to think about is your board shorts. ALITE WEAR competition shorts are stage-ready out of the bag — correct length, correct compliance, correct fit.
