14-Inch vs 16-Inch Board Shorts: Which Length Do You Need?

Written by Ali Bilal — IFBB Elite Pro & Founder of ALITE WEAR

Ali Bilal is an IFBB Elite Pro Men's Physique competitor and founder of ALITE WEAR. ALITE WEAR offers both 14" and 16" inseams because he's competed at every height on stage and knows what the wrong inseam looks like under lights.

This is the most practical question when buying competition board shorts — and the answer is simple. It's entirely about your height and where the hem falls at competition waist position. There's no style preference involved. One length is right for you; the other isn't.

What "inseam length" actually means

The inseam is the measurement from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg opening. A 14-inch inseam ends 14 inches down the inner thigh from the crotch. A 16-inch inseam ends 2 inches further down the leg.

At competition position — waistband sitting one inch below the belly button — that 2-inch difference in inseam translates directly to where the hem sits relative to your knee. On a shorter athlete, 2 extra inches means the difference between just above the knee and at the knee. O...

This is why inseam length is height-dependent, not a style choice.

Height guide: which inseam you need

Height Recommended Inseam Why
Under 170cm / 5'7" 14 inch 16" will reach the knee or below — non-compliant
170–175cm / 5'7"–5'9" 14 inch 14" lands just above the kneecap at competition position
176cm / 5'10" (borderline) 14" or 16" — verify in person Depends on individual leg-to-torso proportions
177–183cm / 5'10"–6'0" 16 inch 14" sits too high; 16" places hem just above the kneecap
Over 183cm / 6'0" 16 inch 16" still correct; hem clears the kneecap at competition position
The definitive home test

Put the shorts on at competition position — waistband one inch below your belly button. Stand in front of a mirror. The bottom of the hem should clear the top of your kneecap by roughly 2–3 cm. If it reaches the knee, the shorts are too long. If it's at mid-thigh, they're too s...

What each inseam looks like on stage

14-Inch Inseam

  • Correct for athletes up to ~175cm
  • Ends just above the kneecap at competition waist position
  • Shows more leg — creates a longer, leaner visual line
  • The most common Men's Physique competition inseam
  • Looks proportionally correct on athletes up to 5'9"

16-Inch Inseam

  • Correct for athletes 176cm and taller
  • Ends just above the kneecap on taller frames
  • Prevents the "too short" look that occurs when 14" sits at mid-thigh
  • Maintains the correct silhouette and leg proportion for tall athletes
  • Also used by shorter athletes with unusually long legs

How the wrong inseam hurts your presentation

Too short (wrong inseam for your height — hem at mid-thigh)

When the hem sits at mid-thigh on a tall athlete wearing a 14-inch inseam, the shorts look disproportionately short. The leg appears truncated rather than extended. This breaks the clean V-taper line that Men's Physique rewards — the eye is drawn to the awkward hem position rather than...

Too long (wrong inseam for your height — hem at or below knee)

When the hem reaches or covers the kneecap on a shorter athlete wearing a 16-inch inseam, two things happen: you fail compliance under NPC rules, and the extra fabric visually shortens the leg. A shorter visual leg line is the opposite of what Men's Physique scoring rewards.

The visual effect of correct length

A hem that sits correctly just above the kneecap creates a long, unbroken leg line. This extends your visual proportions downward — which, combined with a tight waistband sitting at competition position, maximises the V-taper effect judges are looking for. Correct length is not just ...

Proportions matter too: the torso-to-leg exception

Height guidelines work for most athletes, but body proportions vary. Some athletes at 175cm have longer legs relative to their torso — in which case a 16-inch inseam may be more appropriate even at that height. Others at 178cm have shorter legs — and a 14-inch inseam could still ...

The height table above covers the majority of athletes accurately. If you're at the borderline (around 175–177cm), do the mirror test with both inseams before you commit. If ordering online and that's not possible, contact ALITE WEAR with your exact height and we can advise on which in...

Frequently asked questions

Should I get 14-inch or 16-inch board shorts for Men's Physique?

Up to 175cm: 14-inch. 176cm and above: 16-inch. The test is whether the hem clears your kneecap by 2–3 cm at competition waist position. That's the only answer that matters.

What is the difference between 14-inch and 16-inch board shorts?

2 inches of inseam length — measured from the crotch seam to the hem. On the leg, that 2 inches is the difference between just above the knee and at the knee (or mid-thigh and just above the knee, depending on your height).

What happens if my board shorts are too long?

If the hem covers the kneecap, they're non-compliant under NPC rules and you may be asked to change. They also visually shorten the leg, which hurts your presentation.

What if I'm at exactly 175–176cm?

Try both if possible. If you can't, consider your leg-to-torso proportions — longer legs relative to your torso favour 16". Or contact us with your exact measurements and we can advise.

Both Inseams. One Brand.

ALITE WEAR board shorts come in 14-inch and 16-inch inseams — so every competitor gets the right length for their frame. If you're unsure, we'll help you choose.
