Men's Physique Board Shorts Size Guide: How to Get the Perfect Fit

Getting the wrong size board shorts for a Men's Physique competition doesn't just look bad — it costs you in the judging. Shorts that are too long sit below the kneecap and break your lines. Shorts that are too loose move during your routine. Shorts that are too tight pull across the h...

This guide walks you through exactly how to measure, how to pick the right inseam for your height, and how to verify the fit before show day.

Step 1: Take your waist measurement correctly

Most sizing mistakes start here. Athletes either measure at the wrong point or confuse waist with hip measurement.

1

Find your natural waist

Stand upright and naturally. Your natural waist is the circumference of your torso at belly button level — not the narrowest point of your torso, not your hips.

2

Use a soft tape measure

Wrap a soft measuring tape around your waist at belly button level. Keep it level, horizontal, and snug — not tight enough to compress the skin, not loose enough to sag.

3

Breathe and read

Take a normal breath in, exhale, and read the tape at the point where it meets. Don't suck in. Don't flex your core. Note the measurement in inches.

4

Account for competition condition

If you are measured off-season and ordering for a show in 10–16 weeks, subtract 1–2 inches to account for condition improvements. Order when you are closer to stage condition if possible.

Competition position check

When you try on the shorts, pull them to competition position — one inch below the belly button, not on the natural waist. The fit should feel secure but not tight. Slide two fingers inside the waistband; that is the right clearance.

ALITE WEAR size chart

Size Waist (inches) Recommended Height (14" inseam) Recommended Height (16" inseam)
S 28–30" Up to 5'7" / 170cm 5'8"–5'11" / 173–180cm
M 30–32" Up to 5'7" / 170cm 5'8"–5'11" / 173–180cm
L 32–34" Up to 5'8" / 173cm 5'9"–6'0" / 175–183cm
XL 34–36" Up to 5'9" / 175cm 5'10"–6'1" / 178–185cm
XXL 36–38" Up to 5'9" / 175cm 5'10"–6'2" / 178–188cm

If you are between sizes, size down for competition. Sizing up risks the shorts sitting too loose — particularly around the hip — which looks sloppy on stage and can cause movement during posing.

Step 2: Choose the right inseam length

This is the second most common mistake. The inseam determines where the hem lands on your leg — and that's what determines compliance with NPC's "just above the knee" rule.

14-inch inseam

Correct for athletes up to approximately 175cm / 5'9". The 14-inch inseam places the hem just above the knee when the shorts are at competition position. This is the most common competition length for Men's Physique.

16-inch inseam

Correct for athletes 176cm / 5'10" and above. Taller athletes wearing a 14-inch inseam will find the hem sits too high — mid-thigh rather than just above the knee. A 16-inch inseam corrects this and produces the right silhouette at competition position.

Length check you can do at home

Put the shorts on at competition position (one inch below the belly button). Stand in front of a full-length mirror. The hem should clear the top of your kneecap by no more than 2–3 cm. If the hem is at mid-thigh, the shorts are too short. If it reaches the kneecap, they are too long...

How fit affects your score

Fit is not purely a compliance issue — it is a visual issue. The judges are assessing your V-taper, your muscular development, and your overall presentation. Board shorts that fit correctly amplify your physique. Board shorts that fit poorly work against it.

Too loose (common mistake)

  • Fabric sags at the hip and breaks the silhouette
  • Shorts shift during posing transitions
  • Waist appears larger than it is — reduces visible V-taper
  • Excess fabric can bunch under stage lighting

Correct fit

  • Clean, flat hang from waist to hem
  • Stays in place through all posing transitions
  • Waistband frames the waist tightly — emphasises V-taper
  • Looks structured and intentional on stage
IFBB Pro tip

The narrower your waist looks relative to your shoulders, the better your V-taper reads on stage. A properly fitted waistband — sitting exactly at competition position and pulling snug — can make your waist look up to an inch smaller. That's free conditioning.

When to order and how to verify fit before show day

Order at least 4–6 weeks before your competition

This gives you time to receive the shorts, test them in a posing session, and exchange them if the size or length isn't right. Ordering the week before a show leaves no margin for error.

Verify fit in a practice run

Put the shorts on at competition position and run through your full posing routine — front comparisons, side presentation, back comparisons, and walk-on. Move at the same pace you will on stage. The shorts should stay exactly where you placed them throughout. If they drift, slide, or r...

Check fit with competition tan

If you plan to do a spray tan or apply self-tan before your competition, do a practice run wearing your shorts after the tan. Tan can slightly affect how fabric sits on skin, especially around the waistband. Confirm the shorts still sit at competition position after the application.

Bring a backup pair

Always have a backup pair of the same model in the same size in your show day bag. Unexpected rips, staining from tan, or logistics errors happen. Your backup is insurance — never leave for a competition without it.

Frequently asked questions

What size board shorts should I get for Men's Physique?

Measure your natural waist at belly button level and match it to the brand's size chart. If you're between sizes, size down. The shorts should sit one inch below the belly button and end just above the knee at competition position.

What inseam length do I need?

Athletes up to 175cm typically need a 14-inch inseam. Athletes 176cm and taller typically need a 16-inch inseam. The hem should clear the kneecap by no more than 2–3 cm at competition position.

How do I measure my waist for board shorts?

Stand naturally and place a soft tape measure around your waist at belly button level — not the narrowest point of your torso, not your hips. Read the measurement while breathing normally.

Should I size up or down between sizes?

Size down for competition. Board shorts that are slightly too large move during posing and look baggy on stage. Aim for a fit where you can slide two fingers inside the waistband — secure but not restrictive.

How should board shorts fit for posing?

Flat across the hips with no pulling or bunching, waistband one inch below the belly button, hem just above the kneecap. They should stay in position through all posing transitions without adjustment.

Can I alter board shorts if the length is wrong?

You can, but it requires a skilled tailor and maintaining the correct hem finish is difficult. Buying the correct inseam from the start is simpler and produces better results.

The Right Size. The Right Length. Stage Ready.

ALITE WEAR board shorts come in 14" and 16" inseams so you get the correct competition length for your height — not a compromise. Designed by an IFBB Pro, built for the stage.
