Men's Physique Tanning Products: Best Options for the Stage

Written by Ali Bilal — IFBB Elite Pro & Founder of ALITE WEAR

Ali Bilal is an IFBB Elite Pro Men's Physique competitor and founder of ALITE WEAR. He has used every major competition tanning product across multiple seasons and has a clear view of what works under stage lighting and what doesn't.

Competition tan is not optional in Men's Physique — it is a mandatory part of the presentation. Under the high-intensity lighting used at bodybuilding competitions, a competitor without appropriate stage tan appears washed out, flat, and undefined compared to fully tanned competitors. ...

Why competition-specific products are required

Standard consumer self-tanners are not formulated for competition stage lighting. At shows, competitors stand under bright halogen or LED stage lights that wash out colour and flatten muscle definition. Competition products are formulated for this environment — they use higher DHA conc...

A competitor who arrives at their first show using a standard self-tanner will immediately appear lighter and less defined than every other competitor who used competition-specific products — regardless of their physique condition. This is one of the most common and most avoidable firs...

The main tanning product categories

Professional spray tan (venue-applied)

The most consistent option for first-time competitors. Professional tanners operate at most NPC competitions — they are experienced with stage lighting requirements, apply product evenly, and can achieve a depth of colour that's difficult to replicate with self-application on your firs...

DHA-based self-application sprays and lotions

Products like Pro Tan Overnight Competition Color and Liquid Sun Rayz are applied in multiple thin layers over 3–5 days leading up to competition. The DHA reacts with the skin's amino acids to produce a tan that develops over 4–8 hours per application. Consistent and durable resu...

Instant bronzers / oil-based products

Products like Dream Tan and Jan Tana Competition Color are applied on show morning and provide instant colour. Oil-based products like Dream Tan also give a posing oil effect that enhances muscle separation under stage lighting. Preferred by many advanced competitors at the national and pro ...

Tanning products and board shorts

Every competition tanning product — whether DHA-based, oil-based, or bronzer — stains fabric on contact. Board shorts are particularly affected at the waistband (which sits directly against tanned skin all day) and at the leg openings.

Product Type Staining Level Fabric Interaction
DHA-based spray/lotion (Pro Tan, Jan Tana) Moderate Brown staining at contact points. Removable if washed promptly in cold water.
Oil-based bronzers (Dream Tan) High Deep colour transfer — the oil carries pigment directly into fabric fibres. Requires oil-safe cleaning approach.
Posing oil (applied over tan) Low–Moderate Oil transfer at contact points. Most competition fabrics resist oil penetration — wash promptly regardless.
Never use hot water on tan-stained shorts

Hot water sets DHA stains permanently. Always wash competition board shorts in cold water within 24–48 hours of competition. See the tan removal guide for stubborn stain treatment (white vinegar method).

Application tips for self-application products

  • Exfoliate first: 2–3 days before your first application, exfoliate thoroughly — particularly elbows, knees, and ankles where skin is thicker and absorbs unevenly.
  • Build in layers: Multiple thin layers produce more even, consistent colour than one heavy application. Apply nightly for 3–4 nights.
  • Use a helper for your back: Even back application is nearly impossible alone. Find a training partner or family member who can apply product to your back consistently.
  • Wear dark clothing post-application: DHA and bronzers transfer to fabric before they're fully dry. Use old dark t-shirts and dark bedding on the nights you're applying.
  • Practice before the show: Do a full application trial 4–6 weeks before your competition so you know how many layers you need, how your skin responds, and what the final colour looks like.
Practice your application before show day

Competition tan application is a skill that produces better results with practice. First-time self-applicators frequently get uneven coverage, missed spots, or lighter colour than expected because they underestimated how many layers are needed. Run a full trial application 4–6 weeks ...

Bring a touch-up kit to the venue

Even with professional spray or multiple self-application layers, tan can transfer, crack, or lighten during the time between prejudging and evening show. Bring a small touch-up kit backstage: a bottle of your application product, a small foam applicator or brush, and paper towels. Tan tou...

Frequently asked questions

What tanning products do Men's Physique competitors use?

Professional spray tan (venue-applied), Pro Tan Overnight Color, Jan Tana, Dream Tan, and Liquid Sun Rayz are the most common. First-time competitors should use professional spray tan for the most consistent result.

What is the best competition tan for Men's Physique?

Can you use regular self-tanner for Men's Physique?

No. Standard consumer self-tanners don't produce the depth or colour consistency required under competition stage lighting. Competition-specific products (Pro Tan, Jan Tana, Dream Tan) are formulated for the stage environment.

How do competition tanning products affect board shorts?

They stain fabric — particularly the waistband — through direct skin contact. Wash in cold water within 24–48 hours of competition to remove most residue. Never use hot water or machine-wash on high heat — this sets the stain permanently.

Tan-Ready Board Shorts.

ALITE WEAR competition board shorts are made from performance fabric that handles the rigours of competition day — including tan contact. Wash them correctly and they last multiple seasons.
